The new library is so beautiful! *sparkles* My quartet performed there today. We played Shostakovich string quartet #6 first movement 3 times, the last time on a stage. There were so many people. It was as if the entire Berkeley population turned out. Ok, I'm bored by blogging right now. I'm gonna go and archive or something.

Whatever.

Went to DMV today. Waited in line HELLA long. Just for a stupid ID card I won't be getting for another 60 days, too. The place reminded me of the Immigration office. Unfriendly, with really low ceilings... Meant to feel oppressive, I'm sure.

I should go to bed. I haven't slept well this week. And it's supposed to be Spring Break too. *rubs eyes* I'm going to go before I konk out over the keyboard.

Vinita: Wai~ Thank you! Thank you! *bows* I did have a rather interesting birthday, now that I think about it. Like I told you over AIM, it wasn't very special at the time, this year, but last Sunday I went to see Ice Age and I realized that I can now go see R-rated and NC-17 movies if I wanted to, because now I'm OLD ENOUGH!! Yata! That made turning 17 all worth it! Thank you to movie producers for making age 17 a special age!~

Ahem...

Gave the cat a bath today. Very thoroughly. Nearly got my eyes clawed out in the bargain. But now she smells very nice, of flowers and herbs and such. She's very skinny under all that fur, though. Rushed to the game with Encinal, won the women's double, lost the mixed double that I was substituting in. I'm not made for mixed doubles, me, because I'm loathe to play the part of the girl, forever standing in the front, close to the net. I feel more comfortable in the back. I think we lost the whole game today. Oh well, we won our first three. It should be enough

On Tuesday evening, I sat down in my bed (after coming back from Starbucks w/ Maryam) and tried to study for an econ test. I studied for an hour, then set my alarm clock to wake me up in an hour, went to sleep propped up against my pillow (and the wall), and woke up when my alarm rang, to study again. Thus I did alternatively for 4 or five hours. Then, around 3 or 4 o'clock, I set my alarm clock again, and went to sleep, but this time with my head on my pillow, streched horizontally. That was my mistake, because I slept dead straight through my alarm, waking up only when my second alarm woke me up at 7 o'clock, in time for school. So, I have not much confidence in the test, though I may say I did passing well. I have more confidence in the stat test I took today. It was rather easy, though the facility of it made me nervous. Do you have any idea how hard it is to be courteous to someone when you've had only 4 1/2 nonconsecutive hours of sleep? I nearly bit my coach's head off when he talked to me. I need sleep.

Right now I can't stand the thought of typing up (or writing) about my trip to D.C. The idea both irks and repulses me, for the amount of time I'd be spending doing it. It also does not bear for one to think too much of the past, though god knows I LIVE in the past. So, I think I won't write anymore. Suffice it to say that I had a good time, met a few people, and came home safely, though dreadfully behind on homework.

I finished Kushiel's Chosen. Oh! Such a good book!!! I can't wait for the last book.

Ok, somewhat about the opening quote I'm using for this page. It's a quote describing the flower on the little prince's planet. It translates roughly as "Because she did not want him to see her cry. This is a very proud flower..."

Yeah...

Close-Up Washington D.C. Trip
Part 1: Sunday, March 3

I guess one of the things I noticed almost right away upon arrival in Washington D.C. was that it was rather chilly.

Well, "rather chilly" is an understatement. Downright freezing would be a more accurate description. The cold wasn't so noticeable at first, because we'd all just stepped out from a steaming airport. I thought the cold was a wonderfully refreshing after roasting slowly inside, but many others complained of the cold as we waited for our chartered bus to pick us up.

Everything started that morning when my alarm clock buzzed me awake at four a.m. in the morning. I groaned, slammed my hand on the snooze button, and went back to dreamland.

Five minutes later, my second alarm clock shrilled, dragging me back to wakefulness. (Yes, I have two alarm clocks. You have no idea how well that works) It wasn't even light outside yet, and I felt a strong urge to just bury my head under the covers and sleep again. However, I knew the plane wouldn't wait for me, so I grudgingly fell out of bed and tried to make my way in the dark to wake up my mom. When I got to her room, I took one look at her sleeping form and warm covers, and my id won and I climbed into bed with her.

At approximately 4:45, my dad called and asked me if I was ready or not, as he was waiting outside in his car. I'd been dreaming about a little boy and a bus, but as soon as the phone rang, I jumped out of bed and tried to look as if I'd been up all along.

I was ready in 15 minutes, and my mom helped me carry the luggage to my dad's car. The first thing that I saw as I left the house was the not-quite-full moon hanging brightly against a deep blue sky. I won't describe the sky as velvety, as it is often described, because it was far from velvety. Look up at the sky was more like looking into eternity, and the moon my destination.

Anyway...

I was a little anxious to be on my way, because I'd overslept. I was amazingly energetic, considering I'd packed slowly the previous night and didn't end up in bed until 2 a.m. All in all, 2 hours of sleep is a little straining on the nerves.

We drove along highway 1 from Berkeley through San Francisco (at least I think it was highway 1...). That particular highway leading to the SF airport had a nice eastern view, so I was able to see the eastern horizon turn slightly purple-red as we drove. It was probably as close to a sunrise as I'll ever see.

The next part is dull. We arrived at the airport, my dad stuffed $30 into my hands, I found my classmates, got my ticket (or actually someone else's ticket; we all had to switch tickets around), went through security. Poor Gene was detained for 10 minutes at the security checkpoint; Rene even longer than that. Maryam was told to take her shoes off... I didn't have a single problem getting through security; for some reason, I never do. How boring.

Those of us who'd gotten through security made for the gate. Of course, many of us deviated off our paths straight to the counters of Jamba Juice, myself included. (They didn't have Chocolate Moo'd!) That probably took about 15 minutes. By the time we got to the gate, they were already boarding. My seat was the very center seat of the plane, sandwiched between four people. What a good way to develop claustrophobia. The flight was long and boring, to say the least. I couldn't see the plane take off or land, because I didn't get a window seat. One small consolation was that every seat had a small tv screen. However, my earphones didn't work, so I watched Spy Kids twice without sound, while listening to Hamasaki Ayumi's newest album "I Am..." (which I burned the night before) on my cd player. It was pretty good until I heard Maryam's notorious giggles through my already loud earphones, upon which I immediately turned up the volume.

Got off plane, got my luggage, heard Mr. Teel make a speech about not losing his job, "...so try to be on your best behavior...", went outside to wait for our bus. I'd brought my violin with me (and Gene brought his viola), so it was kinda a drag to carry the thing around like a baby.

It wasn't until about 20 minutes into the bus trip before I realized what was strange. There was a littly boy on the bus; the bus driver's son. I'd had another one of my weird premonition dreams.

Everyone arrived at the hotel very tired and rather disappointed, because we'd thought we would be staying at a hotel one block over. It was much more elegant than the Holiday Inn where we were staying. Every one of us dragged our luggage into the hotel and went to get our hotel room assignments.

There was a seriously annoying mix up with my and Melissa's room, because the program lady had assigned Maryam and Becca to room 306, but had given them the keys to 310, which was actually our room... Both Melissa and I thought it was dumb to move our things into room 310, because we'd already put our things into 306. But in the end I was very glad that we'd gotten the room we did, because workshops were assigned by room numbers.

Our other roommates were from Chicago and were rather shy girls who didn't say much unless you bothered to really talk with them.

Hotel dinner was... well, the first time I saw it, that Sunday evening of our arrival, I grimaced, shuddered, and thought "Ick." It wasn't so bad once I got used to it, though.

In the first workshop that we had, our P.I. (Program Instructor), Jose, had us play some sort of "get to know everyone" game. We had to find someone we didn't know and ask them their name, where they came from, whether they were liberal or conservative, and what their likes and dislikes were. I talked with a girl named Leah from Fremont, Michigan, who identified herself as conservative. There were 4 or 5 conservatives in our workshop of 23 people. After we were done, everyone had to talk about who they talked with, so that the whole group can get to know everyone else. Two people stuck in my mind almost right away, Tim and Nicky, because they interviewed each other and one liked peas and the other didn't... -_-; The only other person that took my notice was the boy who ended up sitting next to me after everyone was done interviewing. He was introduced as Spartacus (by the people who talked with him). I think everyone took notice of him because of his name. I was curious and I asked him if Spartacus was his real name. He said no. I asked his real name. Andrew. I asked why he called himself Spartacus. He shrugged, smiled, and told me that sometimes his family and friends called him Andy, but most of the time he prefers to be called Spartacus because... ok, I don't quite remember. It's been more than two weeks, after all, but it had something to do with what kind of personality he had. Kinda like I'm "Kei-chan" when I'm bouncing off the wall, or "Keiko" when I'm more serious. Anyway, we ended up talking after the workshop ended and everyone had to go to a "Welcome to Close-Up: Introduction to Rules and such" meeting. Yay, I made my first friend on the trip...

And so ended my first day. After the meeting, we basically had an hour of freetime, in which I wandered around the hotel, looked in the gift shop, and bought a really pretty shawl for my mom. Then, bed. The bed were really springy mattresses, which is bad for my back. As soon as I got into the bed, I wished that I had my futon. The guys were groaning about the sleeping arrangements, because there were 4 people to a room, and only two beds. The roommates you choose from your own school has to share a bed with you. While that wasn't a problem for the girls, the guys moaned and complained about having to sleep with another guy. ^-^ I heard later that some guys arranged for two people to get the two beds, one slept on the floor, and one slept in the bathtub... Dumb guys. So fussy.
